I love the combination of the monochrome black and white mix! It can look so chic and you can dress it up or down.  This particular outfit is perfect for the cooler days in Autumn or Spring but if you add black riding boots and a cardigan it’ll be a lot warmer.  Add a blazer and scarf for the chilly mornings and evenings and to make it a little smarter.

I rarely add make-up to these posts but the lipstick I wore here  added a completely different  look to the outfit. Usually I would wear a nude or bright red lipstick with this kind of outfit but this dusty Vintage Pink from Rimmel London is so different and quite pretty!

Bronze, brown and navy

I still don’t think we have had a proper Winter yet! The days are chilly but we haven’t been super cold in JHB like it is usually! These days have honestly felt like Autumn, which I love! It is rather difficult to dress for this kind of weather though, super chilly in the morning and evenings and warm (sometimes hot) during the day. Here is my take on a warmer Winter’s day with bronze, brown and navy!

One good thing about this kind of outfit is that you can layer. This Cotton On dress is just so comfortable and cool because it is made of breathable cotton. I quite like mixing navy with brown and bronze as it makes it more Winter looking. If you end up stripping your scarf off, have a necklace underneath to keep with the colour combo! I like to try match up my make-up with the same colour palette like this bronze lipstick from MAC.

How do you dress in this kind of weather?

Matte nails

Our generation are so lucky! We are exposed to such fun beauty products. Brands are creating the most amazing colours and incredible innovations that our mothers and grandmothers would never have been exposed to in their era! My latest craze? Matte nails!

I have always enjoyed experimenting different nail colours, not so much the nail art as I am not that adventurous but think on some people it looks incredible! In the recent magazines and beauty trends online, the matte nail varnish is the “in thing”!

There are a few nail polish brands that stock the matte option instead of the traditional gloss top coat – Cosmopolitan June issue features these great options if you’re interested.

I have always loved the Essence range of cosmetics and beauty as they have such a variety and are very affordable especially when you would like to test out the different trends. Below is what the Matte nail polish looks like as well as the Express dry drops which assist in the drying of your nail polish quickly – always a win!

One of the best makeup items one could keep, mascara!

This bold little wand is something that will brighten up your face whenever you use it. Whether you do not have any foundation on or if you are looking for the dramatic eye effect, you cannot go without the magic wand, mascara!

I have always used black mascara as I feel this compliments the eye and the makeup around the eye best. Some prefer a dark brown and others a dark blue.  Because my eyes are green and I always wear shades of brown eye shadow, the black mascara frames the eye beautifully.

Some find it very difficult to find the correct mascara to wear as there are so many to choose from and there are so many different shaped wands.

In the past I used Maybelline Great Lash mascara. What a reliable, trusted old friend this product is. If you are in the process of finding the perfect mascara to suit your look, I would suggest using this in the interim.

I have been using the L’Oreal 4D False Lash Architect for a few years now as I love the how it elongates the lashes and gives them a very dramatic effect. I have tested a few different ways of applying the mascara to result in different looks like the cat-eye, retro or the natural lash look.

Marie Claire’s April issue has a fabulous beauty special featuring the latest mascara trends.  Six great mascaras, at really affordable prices are showcased across this spread and after reading each of the write ups; I am rather tempted to try one or two. I will let you know which I choose and the results!

Which mascara do you use and would you recommend any others?

Clarins Everlasting Foundation

I have been asked by a few friends to write a post on foundation. One little item that I feel is the worst to buy because it is like trying to find a good pair of jeans – impossible!

I had found an amazing foundation with an SPF which I absolutely loved! So easy to apply and it matched the colour of my skin perfectly so I had a natural look. Unfortunately, this was discontinued and couldn’t be found anywhere! Knowing that I would have to start my mission of finding the perfect foundation again, without much time was not clever – I left it to the last minute with one pump away from the foundation finishing!

This has to be one of the most difficult items to buy because of the colour matching. My advice? When you have a quarter of your foundation left in the bottle, make sure you go to the shops before you land up in my situation. At least this will give you some time to search for something new if you need to.

After a minor panic attack, I decided to start the mission. MAC is a very popular brand and there have been great reviews about their makeup. After testing out the MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in the chair of a MAC station in Edgars, I bought it. After some time using the foundation, I was so sad to discover that the foundation seemed to crack and looked flaky. My skin can be dry at times which is what I thought caused this effect. I then bought a prima – MAC Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage, which felt wonderful on the skin, very easy to apply, smooth and silky. This specific prima had a slight glitter to it and it evened out the complexion of my skin removing any redness.

One negative about this was that I had to buy two products at a time which weren’t friendly on the wallet and the foundation was very easily transferable onto my clothes. It wasn’t as long lasting as I had hoped.

After a visit back home to see the family, and discussing this stressful situation with my mum, she recommended the Clarins range of foundation. A foundation she has used for a long time! In fact, she should be the brand ambassador for Clarins as she has used their products for years and highly recommends all of them. I am now using Clarins Everlasting Foundation …. and it is amazing. The best foundation I have used in a very long time. Clarins Everlasting Foundation matches the colour of my skin perfectly, it has an SPF but is light and covers all blemishes, lasting the full work day without any marking or rubbing off. I addition to looking great after using this product, the Clarins Everlasting Foundation has the most wonderful scent making the experience of using it so worthwhile!

From weak to strong…

How many of you battle with the strength of your nails? I have always had nails that look like I have just had a French manicure when they are grown. I am very ashamed to say that I battle from the bad habit of biting… When I go through the long bursts of time that I do not bite, I seem to make progress although I think from the biting the strength of the nail has completely given up.

My mum working with her hands all day in the garden or kitchen has also had a problem with her nail strength and found that they seem to flake too. She introduced me to this product that I haven’t ever seen before, Jens Nail Care Treatment. It is a very small range in Dischem which can be missed if you do not know about it. There is a clear polish that you can use as a base on top coat as well as the cuticle cream. Although these are a little more expensive that the usual strengtheners or cuticle oils, this treatment really works.  My mum and I have tried various products over the years to treat or assist in the rejuvenation of our nails. We have never had any success until we found Jens! With its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial benefits and numerous vitamins, I think we have found the solution.

Striking eyes

One of the most difficult practices in make-up for me is the liquid eyeliner. I either smudge it all over my eyelid, look like I had hiccups whilst drawing the line or end up drawing all over my eyeball…which can be rather painful!!

I have followed the wonderful blogger inspiration, Cupcakes and Cashmere for a few years now and I have always loved the way she dramatizes her eyes with a single line creating the most gorgeous cat eye effect. eye

As much as I have tried this style, I just cannot seem to get it right. I feel like my eyes just don’t have the shape to allow a ‘winged’ tip at the end corner of my eye. Lauren Conrad has always mastered this art of the ‘winged eyeliner’ since the days of Laguna Beach and The Hills.

After much debate and envy of the women that get this technique right, I decided to attempt this cat eye. Although I think the craft still needs work, Essence Eyeliner Pen assisted in the smooth motion of drawing a line on creating the cat eye effect without using a liquid eyeliner. Essence do offer a choice of different eyeliners though. Their gel eye pencil is another one of my favourites.

Perk up those lips!

Something that has always had the strangest taste. I have never been a fan of the bright coloured stain one applies to the lips. For some odd reason it has always reminded me of old grannies – the action of smearing on the thick sticky paint that seems to come off onto everything…especially children’s cheeks!

This wonderfully ancient beauty product has quite the history! Starting almost five thousand years ago, women used to grind precious stones to dust onto their lips, look how far us women have come! Although we still love the glitz and gloss of some lipsticks, the new rage is matte!

I have always been quite a reserved person when it comes to beauty. I tend to stick to the safe options of light pinks and nudes when it comes to lipsticks and nail varnish. The lighter colours are pretty and feminine like the “In the Nude” and “Sweet Surrender” Morgan Taylor nail lacquer or “Nude Rose” and “Sweet Rose” from Clarins Rouge Eclat range. I always feel elegant when wearing these colours as they are classics that will last through any trend!

I thought I should bounce out of my comfort zone and try something new. It is a new year full of new adventures is it not? Because one of the recent trends in South Africa is bold and bright, I thought I should try a different coloured pout for a change! Revlon® Colourburst™ “Elusive Insaisissable” is a matt balm which is really fun and on trend!

Revlon® ColourStay Ultimate Suede™ is a new brand of lipstick on the shelves at the moment and goes on really smoothly. It has a slight sheen to it which can be an alternative to adding lip gloss over your lipstick – very convenient! This colour below is “Front Row”, a very pretty coral colour and when applied is beautifully iridescent!

I have to say, the bright is rather fun! I think I’ll keep it up!
